n the 3rd December, Korea went through a nightmare which has lasted for 6 hours before it vanished. The Korean’s President Yoon Suk Yeol declared the martial law which was as a “chock” for all the Koreans.
The citizens didn’t hesitate to reveal their emotions, expressing through protests and chanting till the Law was abolished. Hence, what would happen to Yoon ?
v Chapter 1 :
o Martial law, way to the new World of development in South Korea
I) The martial Law:
Martial law is the replacement of civilian government by military rule and the suspension of civilian legal processes for military powers1.
Martial law can continue for a specified amount of time, or indefinitely, and standard civil liberties may be suspended for as long as martial law continues.2 1
Most often, martial law is declared in times of war or emergencies such as civil unrest and natural disasters. Alternatively, martial law may be declared in instances of military coups d'état.3
II) Korea’s latest advancements:
*The research and development*:
Despite facing some challenges, like a 16.7% decrease in research and development (R&D) funding in 2023, South Korea is still dedicated to promoting innovation. This means that even though the government and businesses are spending less money on new research, they are continuing to support projects and ideas that help advance technology, science, and other fields without forgetting the support toward establishing companies in sectors like biotech and cyber security, emphasizing the importance of the research development for maintaining competitive advantages.4 5
* Global Positioning *:
South Korea's reputation as a digital powerhouse is reinforced by its leading global ICT infrastructure and rapid advancements in technology. The country has been recognized for its contributions to the Digital Revolution, including the launch of the world's first 5G network.6
*Space Exploration*:
This country is developing its own Nuri rocket for satellite launches, which has become a key project for enhancing its space capabilities, aiming to gather valuable data about the space and specifically the moon. Thing which let Korea’s progress reach a higher level and move toward further space missions, including potentially sending a lander to the moon.7
III) The Parliament Position:
After that night, the demonstratives were chanting and protesting while the Parliament was thinking of a way to abolish the Yoon’s declaration since “it makes no sense” as the Parliament has called it.
A few minutes after, the Nation Assembly convened an emergency session where Lawmakers voted unanimously to reject the Martial Law, then declaration was rejected.
v Chapter 2 :
o The Dark Side of Martial Law in the Korean’s
History
I) Shadows of the past:
The Martial Law doesn’t take place only in the war or in an emergency occasion but, it could also be adopted to manage the country’s affairs in such normally way for instance Russia and Algeria...
However, the Koreans have had and still have negative memories toward this law, starting from the past till now since it was rich of repression, pain and suffer. Here are some pictures that illustrate what has just been said to explain the reason behind the fast reaction of the Koreans after the declaration.

The repression and the power that militaries had when they reached the authority in 1979 .
fig 3
Besides suppression, there was also violence and savage behavior which soldiers treated citizens with, without consideration or pity in 1980.
II) People’s reaction face to the martial law:
The declaration of martial law in South Korea sparked a wave of shock and disbelief among the population. Many expressed fear and anxiety, concerned about the restrictions on their freedoms and the potential for political instability. Others felt an anger and outrage, viewing the move as authoritarian overreach and threat to democracy. This situation as mentioned before remains tense, with the future of South Korea democracy hanging in the balance.
The figure shows in detail the participation of 190 Lawmakers who could enter by force to the Parliament since the solders and the polices were blocking the way, 190 Lawmakers defied a contingent of soldiers and voted unanimously to reject.
And here are some opinions of Korean’s people to clarify the reason of this quick rejection. They were chose from different statute, different age and different gender in order to look after the issue from different perspective based on each one’s experiences and background.

"I've lived through hard times before, but this... this is different. I remember the fear, the uncertainty. I just hope this ends soon."
** A defiant student**
"We won't be silenced! This is an attack on our democracy. We'll take to the streets, we'll protest, we won't let them take our freedom!"
**Active Protesters**
"If martial law were declared today, we would be the first to stand against it."
**Spokesperson of the opposition Democratic
Party**
“My only thought was I just needed to stop them, I pushed them away, shook them off, and did everything I could’’
